Hive
Complete and Configurable Langstroth Hive
This Langstroth hive is designed to offer a durable, functional setup adapted to the realities of Quebec beekeeping. Fully configurable, it can be ordered with one to five deep supers/brood boxes, depending on your needs and the development stage of your colony.
Each hive includes:
-
a solid bottom board, providing a sturdy base and good protection against drafts;
-
an entrance reducer, allowing the opening to be adjusted according to the strength of the colony and the time of year;
-
one to five deep Langstroth bodies, as chosen;
-
the corresponding wooden frames;
-
plastic foundations roll-coated with wax;
-
a perforated inner cover, promoting air circulation and helping bees control humidity and temperature inside the hive;
-
a telescoping outer cover with metal sheeting, designed to protect the hive from the elements.
Generously Waxed Foundations
Unlike foundations simply sprayed with a thin layer of wax, our plastic foundations are roll-coated with wax. This method allows for a larger and more uniform application of wax.
This additional layer promotes better acceptance of the foundations by the bees and can help them build combs more quickly and regularly.
Flame Finish Offered as an Option
The hive can be offered with a flame finish applied with a torch combined with Tung oil treatment. This process involves lightly burning the exterior surface of the wood to carbonize its superficial fibers, then applying a light coat of Tung oil to optimize protection.
In addition to giving the hive a dark and distinctive appearance, this finish can help make the wood surface less absorbent and more weather-resistant. It also helps limit direct exposure of raw wood to moisture, while avoiding the use of paint on treated surfaces.
However, the flame finish does not make the wood entirely waterproof and does not necessarily replace all long-term maintenance measures. It is a natural and aesthetic option for beekeepers looking for a different solution from conventional paint or stain. This is why we also apply a coat of Tung oil. Afterwards, an annual application of natural oil such as Tung oil is recommended.
Several Configurations Available
You can customize your hive by choosing:
-
one, two, three, four, or five deep supers/brood boxes;
-
delivery of components assembled or unassembled;
-
a finish in natural wood or flame-treated with a torch.
All boxes are deep format and are supplied with their wooden frames and waxed plastic foundations.
This hive is suitable for both beginner beekeepers who want to start with complete equipment and experienced beekeepers who wish to expand or standardize their equipment.
